Commissioners to allow hiring of night sergeant despite freeze
WORTHINGTON Nobles County commissioners on Tuesday authorized Sheriff Kent Wilkening to replace a night sergeant position vacated more than a month ago by a retirement, but the move didn’t come without considerable discussion and a few attempted political maneuvers by the sheriff. Continue Reading

Way to go Sheriff! I wish you were on the board as well as the Sheriff Dept. We need more common sense like you displayed and more people standing up to these “too big for their britches” commissioners.
I want to start an unofficial poll. Do you agree with the Sheriff or disagree. I agree!
As for you Nicole, there are two sides to every story. What’s the whole story?

In following the news of this area for several years via the Daily Globe I have noticed the increase in crime that Sheriff Wilkening speaks of. It seems like the crime is increasing in numbers and is turning more violent and more serious. This is a trend noted all over our country. I did not notice, in reading the article, any threat made to the commissioners as stated by Commissioner Thier. If you don’t want people to contact you, you should not be an elected official. It is part of the job. I think Sheriff Wilkening’s idea of putting phone numbers on a card is a good one. The residents of the county should be able to contact those making the decisions to potentially leave them unprotected. I am sure the Sheriff takes plenty of calls and expects them, but the Commissioner’s should have to answer for their actions also. It seems to me that the Sheriff has the best interests of the residents and his staff as a priority. I have noticed this in more than one instance with articles in the Globe. So many elected officials forget that they are elected to represent the constituents of their area and have their own personal agenda. This seems to be true in both the metro area and the rural areas.

finally some common sense! the answer to the budget troubles is to cut, and fairly. Time to start with the county administrator and his huge contract, you could cut enough there to keep the sheriff’s department going strong and no one would notice any cuts. for instance, the county administrator has a desk that cost more than a good used car. Next let’s turn down the thermostats in winter and turn them up in summer. It is freezing cold in the county offices and 72 and higher in winter. I know I have gone in to public buildings with a thermometer! My thermostat is 68 at home and 64 at night, no air conditioning in the summer because I can live fine without it. there are so many quick and painless places to cut, why dont we do the cutting? because the real problem with the departments is each one wants to blame some other department, and no one seems to be taking any responsibility! I say the responsibility starts at the top with the county administrator and the commissioners. If they got any guts, they will turn down at least half of their compensation and go about their business with a big smile, because they wont miss it and we will all appreciate it very much.
