Duluth might place new restrictions on strip clubs
June 23, 2010 at 5:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
A city councilor’s proposal, if adopted, would limit how close an adult entertainment business could open to churches, schools and other specified areas.

That area is already blighted, what with the gambling hall right down the block.

Amen brother. It may bring in money for street repair, but this city would be a lot better off with other businesses in that spot.

Seriously Gardner? I mean, are there any, ANY cases where a child/churchgoer/citizen at a plaza has been sucked into an adult entertainment venue? Is there any merit to this that doesn’t have something to do with your own belief system?
People vote with their wallets, and if there weren’t an audience for this type of entertainment, they simply wouldn’t exist. It’s not the council’s responsibility to put a stopper on the capitalistic system of government, is it? Oh wait, this is the same council that voted for the 300 foot rule… nevermind.
I mean, c’mon… where is the sense in creating yet another misguided law that will undoubtedly have other unintended consequences?

Well, now that the Norshor is closed, the drug dealers and whores and homeless and chronic drunks don’t have to deal with that kind of blight on the downtown scene anymore. Thank god for councilors like Sharla Gardner.

“Gardner also has proposed that applicants for adult entertainment licenses should be deemed ineligible if the owner or manager of their establishment has been convicted of a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor or felony sex or obscenity crime.”
To avoid any discrimination, I hope the same rules are in place for bars too then.
No one with any alcohol related offences at all can own or manage an establishment that sells liquor.
Since there’s probably more police calls to bars than strip joints, they better raise up those license prices too.
What the heck, just drive every kind of entertainment business out of a tourist town…makes sense to me.

Why should this be any different? Duluth is nationally known as a tough place to do business. That was stated just a few years ago by native Duluthian, David Oreck, of vacum cleaner fame.

When will this council realize their intended function is not to micro manage every minute detail of every move that is made within this City? What next, will they have to approve the color paint I choose for my house? Are my parenting skills up to par for the council? Am I flossiing well enough? Come on. I think there has been a precedent set within the council and the only way to change it is boot them all and start over. If even one is left they will rot the new members. It’s not just this incident, it’s countless others that just disgust me. The biggest flub, im my opinion, to date, is when the council single handedly ruined Duluth’s opportunity to get the new ice arena/community center in west Duluth, it was absolutely disgusting.

It’ll never happen. We have one or two good and decent councilors, but the rest are so blinded by ideology or are beind held up by their puppet-masters it’s unlikely we’ll ever see a city council that works to bring in careers, keep criminals/leechers out and let’s Duluthians be Duluthians.
Just wait through Brian, the DFD “FIll The Boot” should be coming soon, and we all remember how that went last year.

I don’t see the point, since children get so much exposure to “Adult” things from TV, video games, movies, and the real world (hello remember the Paris Hilton Carl Jr’s commercial? WHY did they need something so on the brink of pornographic to sell a burger?).

1. Ms. Gardner is not a smart politician.
2. Ms. Gardner’s thinking is flawed.
3. The Gambling Hall comment was on point.
4. This town has more churches than Rome. Why not just ban the establishments altogether?

Sorry if I seem full of myself, but anyone that disagrees with this post is either high, or named Sharla. Or both. I don’t really know what would be wrong with you.

Her district doesn’t want a smart politician. They expect very little of their elected representatives and they’re never disappointed.

Oh, and don’t let me forget.
