Rehab center permit denied
June 16, 2010 at 5:00 pm in The Dickinson Press

More than 15 people raised their hands at a Dickinson Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Wednesday at City Hall when asked if they were against having a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in their neighborhood.Continue Reading

How can a town complain about the drug issues yet refuse a place where people can seek help? people are not going to get help if they have to drive to another town and lose work hours. Having one in town would give more of an incentive.

I don’t know about the zoning, but maybe this type of facility should be in a more industrial/commercial area, so it isn’t located near schools and daycares

You’re implying that “these people” are dangerous criminals and shouldn’t be near children. Rarely, if ever, is that the case. Typically, people in these types of facilities are decent people working through serious issues. Obviously, there is still a stigman attached to addiction and a misconception of the types of people using facilities like the one proposed. With that said, however, it’s always possible that there is a better location for a center like this. It’s just a little disappointing the see so much resistance.

I wasn’t implying anything. I have no problem with a rehab facility, but if it didn’t get the permit becasue the residents don’t want it, then it should be moved somewhere where the residents won’t block the permit.

OK, where is the rest of this story? Where is Solberg most recently from and what did he do there, where has he run previous medical facilities, what issues surfaced at the facilities he ran, what is the need for such services in the area — state Human Services and area addiction counselors are obvious sources, what services are already provided in the area, how many people do these providers serve, etc., etc., etc.

It is very upsetting to me that the town throws a fit over something like THIS but allows violent, high risk sex offenders to live near schools, parks, daycares, churches……….. they don’t care about that but they don’t want folks looking for help – folks who probably are NOT child predators – to go somewhere else. Dickinson – what the heck?????

Addiction is a disease. Just like diabetes, cancer…etc. Would a community not want a cancer center built in their community? The key to this story is that there IS a need for a rehab facility here in Dick. The fact that there isnt one is just as awful as someone with cancer not being able to get their chemo. Odds are, if someone is suffering from an addiction, they will also die from that addiction. We all have been affected by someone we know having a problem with drugs or alcohol. If your sister was dying of alcoholism and she couldnt get help because help was 2 hours away would you think differently?
A rehab facility would also help out our local law enforcement and ease some strain on hospitals…etc. Sure, it needs to be well thought out and planned, but being that our area of the country is KNOWN for its high drug use, (Meth, especially) this is a serious issue and needs to be done. It should have been done years ago. Imagine the families and maybe even lives it could save?
Individuals who suffer from addiction are almost always non-violent. And if they are seeking help, then they obviously are not murderers. If they are court ordered, they also would have strict provisions on even being able to leave the facility until the risk factor is down.
♥ We need to start taking care of eachother.

I agree we can vote down a rehab facility but have no say about repeat sex offenders across the street from where my children are everyday……something seams wrong….its violating the sex offenders rights…..I think it would help so many people and the city should have given more options for this if this zoning wasnt agreed on……more info needs to be put out there and this should be something that is pushed to opening soon…

I think there is a huge need for a rehab center in the Dickinson area.
However not in my neighborhood. Not because of those that might be enrolled in the program but for a couple of other reasons.
1.Parking.
2.Friends of those enrolled in the program.
3. Expansion (new additions) to building/buildings.

I certainly agree with your comment, very valid points, but what do “friends of those enrolled” have to do with it? As I mentioned before, I think that there is a misconception among those who seek help for an illness such as addiction. You may be surprised to know that some of your neighbors already are addicts. Addiction is not a disease that is only among those with criminal like behavior…etc. The key being ADDICTON IS A DISEASE. Not something anyone chooses to be, like a robber, rapist…etc. I hate to be devils advocate, but how do we help those who need it if we judge them? Isnt there already enough of a stigma attatched to this disease? Like I said, very valid points, but if not in our neighborhood than where?
Best wishes, and I hope I dont sound like I am trying to push buttons, but we need to help these individuals.♥
