Tonight, the Duluth City Council will discuss whether to extend the time limit on downtown parking meters, possibly boosting it from one hour to two.Continue Reading

I think that it will be good for the shops Downtown however people don’t “feed” the meters now.
I think that there should be more inforcement officers on to help ticket the people that don’t “feed” the meters.

What is the cost of the parking ramps? Under what conditions are they free? At what times of day/week are they free? What businesses validate, and how long is the validation good? Where are the ramps located?
The Duluth city webpage did not seem to have this information. I use the meters since I lack this information, and don’t have the time to find out when I’m downtown.

Sam:
I don’t know of any ramps that are ever free, the meters are free after 5:30pm(well most are, there are some it’s after 8pm)
I also don’t know of any place that validates except some of the hospital/clinic’s.

Robin….why do you want to penalize people who don’t “feed” the meters ? I thought the whole idea for parking meter time limits was to attempt to stop people from feeding the meters all day long. So are you against those who just come down to shop for an hour or two ?
If anything, I think the time limits on meters should be increased to 2 hours…..to allow those who do come down to shop and have lunch to have enough time to enjoy themselves without getting fined for the privilidge of shopping down town. However, I believe they should more actively ticket those who do feed the meters all day long in the same parking space.
It just goes to show you that the city government doesn’t really care about increasing turnover in meterd spaces…..but only about parking fine/ticket revenue generated. I don’t think they have policed the time people have been parking in 1 hour zones for years….they only issue tickets if the meter is expired.
We need to join the 21st century and put in parking kiosks like other cities have. They take credit cards and coins and in many cases can even notify you by cell phone if you’re about to exceed your parking limit. This way you’re not penalizing those who don’t have a quarter in their pocket with a ticket while they are tring to find a place to get change.

Jessica I am not trying to penalize anyone I want the slackers that park and don’t put money in the meters to be given tickets…
I agree that 2 hours would help the shops and people could have a nice lunch and maybe do some shopping.
No matter what you are going to have people that park and feed the meter all day…but there are also a lot of people that never drop on one quarter…

Two hours on downtown meters, please. I’ve had to interrupt a business lunch to run a block to plug my meter, and have had to leave an extended dental appointment to plug a meter. Two hours is a reasonable time for shopping and errands. Extend it, please.

They should be extended. The problem I’m sure the City is having is a lot of those meters are going to have time left on them when people leave. The meters will only be fed 4 or 5 times vs. 8+.

I’m all for it, although it means the meters will only be plugged 4 to 5 times a day instead of 8 to 9, not sure the City will go for that.

An hour and 20 minutes….odd number to come up with. Better than nothing I guess! I saw the council meeting last night and wasnt impressed at all with the excuses for not making the meters 2 hrs. and why does Canal Park get 2 hr parking meters and the downtown area gets the short end of the stick? This does not seem like a fair situation and should be looked in to!

Get rid of the parking meter and people won’t have to worry about keeping their parking spot, subsequently no one will have to worry about parking. Use the tire marking method..
