DUI pilot project expands to Cass

Drunken drivers in Cass County busted twice in 10 years may soon need to submit to twice-daily alcohol testing, depending on where they’re arrested and which judge sets their bail.
Breath testing for repeat DUI offenders has been in place in Burleigh County for about two years, a pilot project that’s now expanding to the rest of the state. Continue reading…

Hmmm, I don’t know about this one. I am all for programs that will eliminate drunk driving, but stating that a person can never drink – whether they’re driving or not – seems to violate a person’s rights. After all, it’s not currently illegal to consume alcohol.
Unless I’m understanding this procedure incorrectly. Please let me know if I simply interpreted the article wrong.

These are folks that have clearly demonstrated they cannot, and will not, drink responsibly. Therefore i have no problem with a program like this that takes away that person’s “right” to drink.

A right to drink? Certainly. A first DUI- it would be to strict to iniate a program like this. But what they’re talking here is about 2 DUI’s or more. These are the folks that have been irresponsible with their “right to drink”. That’s the problem with this country- too much lack of responsibility. Whether it’s not taking responsibility for driving drunk, texting while driving or whatever- we need more accountability for actions. That’s EXACTLY what this program does. It’s simple- drive drunk or face the consequences. It’s time to stop whining about misguided rights.

Why is the dangerous drug alcohol not made illegal if the government has decided a darn good percentage of its population is abusing it, and operating motor vehicles repeatedly after consuming it? How is it not considered the most dangerous substance on earth? The government cannot be our babysitters and determine which of us can consume alcohol and which of us they don’t think are responsible enough. Otherwise, some people could probably constructively use methamphetamines as well, just as some get whacked out and strung out the first time and every time.
