There is no doubt the excessive heat spells are driving people to seek refuge at area lakes to stay cool, but some ignore the dangers and don’t follow safety rules. Drownings are up in many cities as people flock to area lakes and ponds to seek relief. Most of these drownings can be prevented by swimming where life guards are present. Underwater currents can be responsible and inexperienced swimmers find themselves being swept out to deeper water before they realize it then become tired struggling to swim back to shore and eventually go under. A 47yr old man tired swiming to a raft 20yards away and never made it drowning after going under. If you plan to swim especially in deeper waters, it is always wise to pair up with other swimmers and keep an eye on one another. Parents should always be on the alert for their kids when they are swimming in area lakes because it is so easy to take your eyes off of a child for a brief moment, which is all it takes for a child to wander off and possibly drown.
